Vegan Crablets

Basic info

  • 2 ½ kg sayote (chayote)
  • ¼ kg carrots
  • 1 kg gram flour (besan / garbanzo bean flour)
    substitute: mixture of ⅔ kg flour and ⅓ kg cornstarch
  • 1 tsp asafoetida
  • nori
  • cooking oil
  • salt


Note: These directions are minimal as much of the information is provided in the video above.

  1. Peel and cut sayote and carrots into strips. Wash and drain.
  2. Mix gram flour, asafoetida and salt.
  3. Add sayote and carrots gradually. Mix well.
  4. Add a little water if too dry. About 2 tbsp should be sufficient. Not too much as sayote has its own natural juice.
  5. Pre-heat oil.
  6. Wrap mixture in nori.
  7. Fry wrapped pieces immediately to prevent nori from getting too wet.
  8. Strain crablets.


  • Asafoetida and gram flour are available at Indian Stores.
